Student Grants

Education grants explained

A grant is aid that generally does not need to be repaid when you meet its conditions. Availability and amounts are decided by each program, never by an information website.

Federal student grants

Federal grants are typically need-based and are accessed by completing the FAFSA. Your school's financial aid office determines what you are offered.

State education assistance

Many states offer grants for residents, sometimes tied to income, academic progress or attending an in-state school. Check your state higher education agency for current rules.

Institutional grants

Colleges often fund grants from their own budgets. Ask how these are awarded and whether they continue each year.

Watch for warning signs

Legitimate grant programs do not ask you to pay a fee to receive a grant. Be cautious with anyone guaranteeing an award.
